Inter president Marotta insists Chivu 'must remain at Inter for many years' after Scudetto win
Cristian Chivu led Inter to the Serie A title in his first season, and Giuseppe Marotta wants him to enjoy a long future at the club.
Inter president Giuseppe Marotta wants Cristian Chivu to "remain at Inter for many years" after leading the team to the Scudetto title.
Inter's 2-0 victory over Parma – Chivu's former team – on Sunday confirmed top spot for the Nerazzurri with three games of the season to spare.
They have won their 21st Serie A title, with this the sixth secured with at least three matchdays remaining.
Chivu became the fifth manager ever to win the Scudetto in his first season with Inter in Serie A, and the first since Jose Mourinho in 2008-09.
The Romanian took over from Simone Inzaghi, who left Inter at the end of last season following a trophyless campaign, which was compounded by a 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
"As Inzaghi also confirmed the contract termination by mutual consent was on Monday, and on the Tuesday, we decided to go for Chivu," Marotta told DAZN Italia about choosing Chivu.
"It was a courageous choice, but a considered one too, because Chivu already had the curriculum as a player, winning the treble here, of being the Ajax captain at age 21, of winning with the Inter youth team as coach, and also of taking Parma to safety.
"We had no doubts on his skills, so perhaps he was lacking a little in experience, but we supported him to cover this gap in his CV. He can and must remain at Inter for many years, as he has great qualities."
Inter have recorded at least 80 points in a Serie A season (in the three-point-per-win era) for the 12th time in their history.
They have also scored 82 goals in this Serie A; never in the last 75 years have the Nerazzurri scored more within 35 games played in a single tournament of the competition.
Inter also have the chance to claim a double, with a Coppa Italia final to come against Lazio on May 13, and Chivu has been impressed by Inter's resilience this season.
"I was already part of Inter's history before this scudetto," Chivu said.
"I'm happy for these players, for the club and for the fans. The team did well to roll up their sleeves, rebuild, and find the right motivation to have a competitive season.
"They did it, and I'm happy for them: the 21st Scudetto is an important chapter in the history of this great club.
"I'm as happy as when I won as a player, even if back then I was younger, with longer hair and a bit less grey."
