Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Eintracht Frankfurt: Comeback win seals second place for Kovac's men
Borussia Dortmund survived a nervy finish to beat Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday, a win that sealed second place in the Bundesliga.
Borussia Dortmund came from behind to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 on Friday to ensure they would finish the 2025-26 Bundesliga season in second place.
After going a goal down in the second minute, Serhou Guirassy and Nico Schlotterbeck's first-half strikes were followed up with Samuele Inacio's finish 18 minutes from time.
But the Westfalenstadion was stunned into silence after just 78 seconds when former Dortmund man Mahmoud Dahoud wriggled his way past three defenders before teeing up Can Uzun, who guided the ball into the bottom-right corner.
Dortmund improved thereafter, and only a stunning stop from Michael Zetterer denied Inacio's point-blank header, but the Eintracht goalkeeper was picking the ball out of his net twice in quick succession at the end of the first half.
Guirassy swept in a 42nd-minute equaliser, before Schlotterbeck steered Maximilian Beier's cross from the left into the far corner two minutes later to complete the turnaround.
Niko Kovac's side started strongly in the second half as Julian Ryerson saw his near-post effort repelled by Zetterer, though Uzun's shot from the edge of the box kept Gregor Kobel on his toes just after the hour mark.
Inacio thought he had sealed a comfortable win when he rounded off a fine team move involving Jobe Bellingham and Beier in the 72nd minute, but Eintracht made things interesting when Jonathan Burkardt tapped in three minutes from time.
And despite Jean-Matteo Bahoya curling narrowly wide of the right post just over a minute later, Dortmund were able to hold on for their 21st Bundesliga win of the season.
Data Debrief: How may I assist you?
Dortmund were forced to navigate a nervy ending to a match they had dominated for large parts, but their individual quality helped them get the job done, with one of those standout performances coming from Ryerson.
The full-back teed up Guirassy for the equalising goal, which was his 14th league assist this season. Only Henrikh Mkhitaryan 2015-16 (15) and Jadon Sancho 2019-20 (16) have managed more for BVB in a single top-flight campaign. Ryerson also finished with team-high totals for chances created (three) and total crosses (nine).
Kovac's men also bounced back from their defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach last time out, and did so in some style after registering an expected goals (xG) total of 1.74 from their 13 shots, eight of which were on target, compared to Eintracht's 1.12 from their nine attempts.
