Bayern Munich 2-0 Union Saint-Gilloise: Kane's quickfire brace clinches last-16 spot
Bayern Munich joined Arsenal in the last 16 of the Champions League as they overcame Union Saint-Gilloise thanks to Harry Kane's double.
Harry Kane scored twice and missed a penalty as Bayern Munich confirmed their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise.
Kane's goals came within three minutes of each other in the second half, though Bayern were forced to see out the last half-an-hour with 10 men after Kim Min-jae's red card.
Bayern almost found themselves ahead inside the opening two minutes, but Union SG goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen was on hand to deny Kane from close range.
The runaway Bundesliga leaders were frustrated throughout the first half and almost fell behind in the 20th minute, when Kevin Mac Allister slid a shot just wide from a free-kick.
And the best chance of the half fell to the visitors 15 minutes before half-time, with Manuel Neuer producing a fine point-blank save from Promise David's powerful header.
But just seven minutes after the restart, Bayern found the breakthrough when Kane brilliantly flicked Michael Olise's teasing corner from the right in at Scherpen's near post.
Kane then doubled his and Bayern's tally from the penalty spot three minutes later, scoring emphatically from 12 yards after he was brought down by Scherpen in the area.
Kim was then shown a second yellow card for an off-the-ball tug on Raul Florucz, but the hosts had the chance to add further gloss to the scoreline in the 80th minute.
Kamiel Van de Perre handled Olise's cross into the box, but Kane was unable to repeat the trick with his second spot-kick, smashing his right-footed attempt against the crossbar.
Data Debrief: Kane and Olise's quality shines through
Bayern are one of only two sides to already clinch their spot in the last 16, doing so with their 60th home victory to nil in the Champions League, the most by any team in the competition.
But their attackers showed their quality, too. Kane has now been directly involved in 32 goals in 32 Champions League games for Bayern (26 goals, six assists), the most by any player in the competition since the start of the 2023-24 campaign. His 26 goals are also the joint-most in this period, along with Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe.
Meanwhile, Olise, who recorded four goal involvements from the bench in Bayern's 5-1 thrashing of RB Leipzig at the weekend, has now assisted 17 goals in all competitions in 2025-26. That is at least six more than any other player for a club in one of Europe's top five leagues (11 by Lamine Yamal and Arda Guler).
And though Bayern were made to wait for the opening goal, they were deserving of their victory here. They ended the contest with an expected goals (xG) total of 3.14 from their 14 shots, compared to Saint-Gilloise's 0.88 from five attempts.
