Arteta tempers Arsenal's title chances despite closing gap to Liverpool
Despite moving up to second in the Premier League table, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said his side were not favourites for the title.
Mikel Arteta conceded that the Premier League title was still not in Arsenal's hands despite closing the gap to leaders Liverpool following their 3-1 win over Brentford.
The Gunners moved to within six points of Arne Slot's side on Wednesday, with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli cancelling out Bryan Mbeumo's opener.
In fact, Arsenal won a Premier League away game in which they fell 1-0 behind for the first time since February 2023 at Aston Villa (4-2), further showing their title credentials.
And Arteta's side were worthy of their victory, registering an expected goals (xG) total of 1.95 from their 14 efforts compared to Brentford's 0.29 from their two attempts.
The Opta supercomputer hands Arsenal just a 9.5% chance of lifting their first Premier League title since 2003-04, and Arteta seemingly agreed with that prediction.
"We can only win our next match and see what happens. It's not in our hands, but what is in our hands, we need to make sure we do it," Arteta said.
But Arteta did not play down the magnitude of their most recent win, while also showering praise on goalscorers Jesus and Martinelli, who have found their form in recent weeks.
Jesus has now scored six goals in his last four Arsenal appearances in all competitions – as many as his previous 48 beforehand.
The Brazilian has also scored in back-to-back away games in the Premier League for the first time since April 2023.
Martinelli, meanwhile, has scored in three of his last four Premier League away appearances (three goals), more than his previous 26 on the road in the competition beforehand (two goals).
"Very good timing, both of them, really important. It’s a big quality of our team to share the goals across the team," Arteta said.
"Today, we’ve done it again, scoring three very different ways. It’s great, that’s what we need. People up front have to be firing, have to be in that feeling, and they are with that feeling right now.
"They are so consistent with the way they behave, they train, they want it and goals are about moments as well and about the feeling and the energy that a player is in right now. They’re in a good mood right now.
Thomas Frank, meanwhile, said the result was decided by the finest of margins, with a culmination of defensive errors playing a part in all three of Arsenal's goals.
Mark Flekken spilled Thomas Partey's effort to allow Jesus to level, before failures to clear the ball around the area were punished by the Gunners in the second half.
Since the start of last season, the Bees have lost 47 points from winning positions in the Premier League (30 last season, 17 this), at least 10 more than any other side.
They are also the only side yet to keep a clean sheet at home in the Premier League this season. Furthermore, Brentford have gone 11 successive home league matches without a shutout for the first time since October 2007 (13).
"I think we did a lot of things right and overall it was a good performance. The first half was superb, and I liked the way we played - we were brave on the ball," Frank said.
"We were brave under high pressure as well and overall I think we did well. The finest of margins, we have to do better.
"We need to do better than one more goal. If you want to beat Arsenal, we need to do everything right."
