Malik Tillman never lost faith in Bayer Leverkusen's quality, as Kasper Hjulmand expressed his pride at how his team have turned their fortunes around this season.

Leverkusen endured a miserable start to the campaign under Erik ten Hag, who was swiftly sacked.

Hjulmand replaced the Dutchman in September and has guided Leverkusen into third place in the Bundesliga heading into the winter break.

Leverkusen are also well set to push for a place in the play-offs for the Champions League knockout stage.

They ended 2025 on a high note by beating RB Leipzig 3-1 on Saturday, with Martin Terrier, Patrik Schick and debutant Montrell Culbreath on target in a comeback victory.

Asked if he felt Leverkusen would be in this position following their poor start, Tilman told reporters: "Honestly, yes, because I simply believe in this team.

"Obviously, things didn't start well, but we've now created a good standing in the league, and also in Europe. But there's still a lot of room for improvement. We can do a lot more."

Hjulmand added: "I'm very proud of what the team have done in recent months. We're well-placed in all three competitions."

Teenager Culbreath, meanwhile, reflected on a dream debut, having become Leverkusen's fourth-youngest Bundesliga goalscorer, older than only Florian Wirtz, Kai Havertz and Julian Brandt.

He told Leverkusen's media channels: "The coaching staff, the bosses, the club – everyone has backed me. I'm really happy I've been able to give something back. It was incredible.

"I just saw the goal and then shot. And it worked! I definitely don't need any more Christmas presents. Today was the greatest present ever."
