Rugby World Cup finalists the Wallabies will be chasing an elusive grand slam, when they tour the northern hemisphere next year.

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) announced on Friday a five-Test tour, starting against Wales in Cardiff on November 5.

Beaten by the All Blacks in last month's World Cup final Australia, have not completed a grand slam - defeating all home nations of Britain and Ireland on the same tour - since 1984.

But the Wallabies, who will also play two midweek matches - are determined to make history.

"The Grand Slam is one of the rarest achievements in the game and has been a notoriously difficult one for the Wallabies over time with only one successful attempt out of nine," said ARU CEO Bill Pulver.

"The 1984 team etched their names into Australian Rugby folklore and as the years have passed their achievement has become more legendary. It is a great opportunity for the 2016 Qantas Wallabies to create their own slice of history.

"The Grand Slam Tour will cap off a monumental year of Rugby in 2016, which all kicks off in February with the inaugural HSBC Sydney 7s and an expanded Asteron Life Super Rugby competition, before a blockbuster Test series against England, The Rugby Championship, and the debut of Rugby Sevens at the Olympic Games in Rio."

Australia open their tour against Wales at Millennium Stadium, before travelling to 2015 World Cup quarter-final opponents Scotland on November 12.

The Wallabies then face France in Paris seven days later, followed by games in Ireland (November 26) and England (December 3).

Australia's northern hemisphere quest will come after they host England in a three-Test series before attempting to defend their Rugby Championship title.

The Wallabies will also contest three Bledisloe Cup matches against New Zealand.
