Australia pushed their lead to 240 as James Anderson made the most of a deteriorating WACA pitch early on day four of the third Ashes Test on Sunday.

Steve Smith (239) and Mitchell Marsh (181) were both trapped in front by Anderson (2-112) as the pitch in Perth continued to crack.

The duo's 301-run partnership has nonetheless put Australia in control, the hosts reaching 643-7 at lunch – a lead of 240 runs.

Tim Paine (41) and Pat Cummins (36) managed to reach the break as Australia pushed ahead, moving closer to winning the Ashes.

Resuming on 549-4, Marsh fell on the second ball of the day, trapped in front by Anderson before seeing his review fail.

Smith went soon after as the veteran England paceman found his lengths, although the tourists needed a review to dismiss the Australia captain.

Mitchell Starc (1) was run out after a mix-up with Paine, who combined with Cummins to move Australia further ahead before lunch, although the wicketkeeper had to review after being given out lbw to Anderson on 11.

Rain is still expected later on day four and on Monday, leaving Smith with a decision to make about a possible declaration.
