De Gea demands unity as winless Fiorentina visit Inter
Inter take on Fiorentina in Serie A on Wednesday, with the Viola still seeking their first win of the campaign.
David de Gea says Fiorentina's squad must remain united and pull in the same direction as the winless Viola prepare to meet Inter in Serie A on Wednesday.
Eight games into their campaign, Fiorentina are one of only seven clubs without a victory in Europe's top five leagues this season.
Three other Italian sides – Genoa, Pisa and Hellas Verona – are also winless, as are Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga, Metz in Ligue 1 and Wolves in the Premier League.
Stefano Pioli's position is reportedly under threat despite the former Scudetto winner only returning to Florence in July, with a positive result against the Nerazzurri now a must.
Fiorentina recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Bologna last time out, with Albert Gudmundsson and Moise Kean both scoring second-half penalties.
And De Gea says that result needs to have a galvanising effect, telling DAZN: "It's difficult when the victories don't arrive, but we must stay positive.
"Even if we didn't play a great game and we are in a difficult moment, we still came back in a tough match.
"We need to work hard and go in the same direction for the good of Fiorentina."
Bologna went 2-0 up early in the second half, and De Gea concedes he thought a thrashing was on the cards at that point.
"In that moment, I thought we could lose 6-0," De Gea said. "But then we gained confidence and almost won the match. We must do more and stay positive, for the fans too."
While Fiorentina are 18th in the table, Inter are fourth after losing 3-1 to potential title rivals Napoli on Saturday.
Napoli boss Antonio Conte became embroiled in a war of words with Nerazzurri president Beppe Marotta after the match, and head coach Cristian Chivu believes his players were affected by a number of touchline confrontations that took place throughout the game.
"I only talk about football and the match," Chivu told DAZN. "I would like to talk about the good things the players did in the first half.
"We lost our balance in the second half because we were so eager to get the game back on track, so we conceded for 2-0.
"Despite that, we were still able to get back into it, then we wasted energy arguing with their bench and from that moment on we lost sharpness."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Inter – Hakan Calhanoglu
Calhanoglu has scored more goals against Fiorentina (five) than he has versus any other opponent in Europe's top five leagues.
They are also the only team Calhanoglu has ever provided three assists in a single match against, doing so in May 2018 while playing for AC Milan.
Fiorentina – Moise Kean
Kean has scored twice in eight Serie A appearances this season following his last-gasp penalty against Bologna – the same tally he had after eight matches last term.
The Italy international will hope to kickstart his – and Fiorentina's – campaign here after netting twice versus Inter on February 6, his most recent game with multiple goals.
MATCH PREDICTION – INTER WIN
Inter have won seven of their last 10 Serie A matches against Fiorentina (D1 L2), picking up 22 points against them in the process.
That is as many victories as the Nerazzurri managed in their previous 18 matches against the Viola in the competition (D5 L6).
After Saturday's defeat to Napoli, Inter could lose two Serie A matches in a row for the second time since the start of this season, also doing so versus Udinese and Juventus in August and September.
Across the two previous seasons – 2023-24 and 2024-25 – Inter only did so once, versus Bologna and Roma in April this year.
But they will be confident of getting back on track here. Inter have the best attack in Serie A this season, plundering 19 goals, while also leading the way for total shots (148).
Fiorentina have won only two of their last 12 away games in Serie A (D4 L6), also tasting victory just once in their last nine visits to San Siro to face Inter in the competition (D2 L6).
OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
Inter – 66.6%
Fiorentina – 14.5%
