Brentford rout Grimsby as Cardiff edge Wrexham in all-Welsh EFL Cup clash
Brentford eased into the EFL Cup quarter-finals, while Fulham had their work cut out and Cardiff City claimed Welsh bragging rights.
Grimsby Town's dream EFL Cup run came to a sudden halt as they were thrashed 5-0 by Brentford in the fourth round on Tuesday.
League Two Grimsby provided one of the moments of the season so far when they dumped Manchester United out of the competition in the second round.
They followed that win up by beating second-tier Sheffield Wednesday, setting up a meeting with Premier League opponents again in Brentford.
But the Bees, fresh off a superb win against champions Liverpool, were in a far less forgiving mood as they cruised into the last 16.
Mathias Jensen and Keane Lewis-Potter scored in quick succession midway through the first half, with Reiss Nelson adding a third shortly before half-time.
Fabio Carvalho then got in on the act from the penalty spot, before Nathan Collins completed the scoring with 15 minutes remaining.
There was no upset at Wycombe Wanderers either as they lost 5-4 on penalties to Fulham following a 1-1 draw.
Tuesday's third match did see the side in the lower division prevail, even if victors Cardiff City have long been stationed above fellow Welsh club Wrexham in the English football pyramid.
Cardiff's relegation and Wrexham's promotion last season meant the clubs would not meet in the league this term, but a cup clash provided plenty of entertainment.
And third-tier Cardiff were 2-1 winners courtesy of a Will Fish volley in the final 20 minutes.
Data debrief: Cardiff dreaming again
Cardiff had not played in the fourth round of this competition since the 2011-12 season, when they went all the way to the final, only losing on penalties to Liverpool.
That was a remarkable achievement, with Cardiff then in the Championship, and the odds are even more stacked against a third-tier side now. Yet the Bluebirds are now just one win away from a two-legged semi-final.
For Wrexham to meet Cardiff while above them in the pyramid is a sign of their progress; they were in the fourth of 15 consecutive seasons in non-league back in 2011-12.
One has to go back a further 10 years for the last meeting between these two sides, with Cardiff prevailing 3-2 in the third tier in 2002. The bragging rights are theirs again after a win they will feel they merited, outperforming Wrexham in terms of shots (23), shots on target (nine) and xG (1.89).
