Bayern have strong foundation for Bundesliga title bid, says Kompany
Bayern Munich thrashed Heidenheim 4-0 to continue their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season, and moved nine points clear to end 2025.
Vincent Kompany believes Bayern Munich have created a strong foundation to build their title bid on after finishing 2025 with a 4-0 win over Heidenheim.
Josip Stanisic and Michael Olise scored in the first half to put Bayern in a commanding position, with Luis Diaz and Harry Kane both adding late goals.
It means they take a comfortable nine-point lead at the top of the table into the new year, while they are still yet to lose a Bundesliga match this season.
They had a whopping 23 shots worth 4.4 expected goals (xG) in the game and have not lost any of their last 16 away outings in 2025 (W12 D4).
It marks the third calendar year they have completed without suffering a top-flight defeat on the road, after 1986 and 2013.
And Kompany was particularly pleased with the performance, given their many injuries in the build-up to the game.
"I'm very proud because it almost felt like a week during the coronavirus times," Kompany explained.
"Whilst we don't have an outbreak in the team, when the doctor comes, you're always afraid. You know you're going to lose a player or two. In the end, we had 12 experienced players, excluding Alphonso Davies, since he can't really be counted yet.
"We used the young players, and the others did their job. I'm proud of how the squad coped. It's not a given that you can win 4-0 here.
"We didn't make good use of our counter-attacks, which could have decided the game earlier. We have a good foundation for next year.
"The titles will be decided from March on, but we have the foundation now. Our squad will be strengthened again in January, at just the right time. Now we'll take a break and then carry on."
Meanwhile, Kane's 92nd-minute goal was his 51st for Bayern in all competitions, but it also saw him register his 100th goal involvement in Germany's top tier.
He has now scored 81 goals and provided 19 assists in the Bundesliga, reaching triple figures in just 78 matches – he is the quickest player to do so in the competition since data collection began in 2004-05.
Kane achieved the feat in 41 games fewer than the previous record holder, Arjen Robben (119).
But the England captain was more focused on the team's performance, with his eyes already on building on Bayern’s strong start in the second half of the campaign.
"We put in a good performance in the first half, scoring two goals," he said. "We dominated the game.
"In the second half, we gave away a lot of chances, and Heidenheim also had some good opportunities, but Jonas Urbig made a couple of good saves. We could've sealed the game earlier, but in the end, it's an important victory.
"The title in summer was my first, which was very special. We gained a lot of vigour as a team at the Club World Cup, which is hard to break.
"We're in a good position in every competition, so let's see how far we can go. We'll try to keep going as well as possible."
