Sheffield United claimed their first points of the Championship season, after a 1-0 victory over Oxford United.

The Blades had opened the campaign with six straight defeats, and were rooted to the foot of the table, culminating in the departure of head coach Ruben Selles.

With Chris Wilder back in charge, United scored the only goal at the Kassam Stadium through Callum O'Hare in the 65th minute.

The visitors survived a late scare when Greg Leigh hit the post, before holding out to move within two points of rivals Sheffield Wednesday, who drew 1-1 with Queens Park Rangers.

At the other end of the table, leaders Middlesbrough maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw against Southampton.

Adam Armstrong broke the deadlock just after the hour mark at St Mary's, but substitute Kaly Sene scored for the second game running to secure a point for Rob Edwards' side.

Stoke City missed the chance to close the gap on Boro, after they were held to a 1-1 stalemate by Norwich City.

Sorba Thomas cancelled out Jovon Makama's first-half strike at bet365 Stadium, but Mark Robins' side remain four points behind the leaders and drop to third place.

Preston North End and Bristol City were also unable to move closer to Middlesbrough after a goalless draw at Deepdale, though both sides remain in the top six.

Charlton Athletic are now just a point outside the playoff places after a 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers, with Macaulay Gillesphey, Sonny Carey and James Bree all on target at The Valley.

Meanwhile, Watford moved clear of the relegation zone after coming from behind to beat Hull City 2-1.

The in-form Oli McBurnie put the visitors ahead at half-time at Vicarage Road, but Imran Louza and Vivaldo Semedo struck after the break to complete the turnaround and move the hosts up to 16th place.

Boro's 77th minute equaliser protected their seven-game unbeaten run in the Championship. Their previous longest unbeaten run in the league was nine games, from 6 March to 13 April 2024.

Consistency in the final third has been paramount for Boro, having scored in each of their last seven league games, matching their longest goalscoring streak in the Championship since February. 

Thomas' leveller ensured Stoke have now won four points from losing positions in the Championship this season, only Leicester City (five) have recovered more.
