Kasper Hjulmand is determined to see Bayer Leverkusen show their identity on the pitch when they host PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Leverkusen and PSV have met twice previously in European competition, with both coming in the first round of the 1994-95 UEFA Cup. After a 5-4 home win for the German side in the first leg, the second leg in the Netherlands ended 0-0.

Leverkusen opened their European campaign with a 2-2 draw with FC Copenhagen, with a last-gasp own goal giving Hjulmand's side a point.

The Werkself are still yet to lose under the Dane since he replaced Erik ten Hag, winning two and drawing two of their matches under him so far.

Now, ahead of their first Champions League home game of the season, Hjulmand is aiming for his first win in the competition with Leverkusen, and he has high hopes for the team.

"Our focus is on showing our identity on the pitch tomorrow and playing the way we want to. We'll give our all to win," Hjulmand said.

"Every player can be who they want to be here – and we do our best to help all players develop in the best possible way. I see a great team, and if we fully realise the potential, it can be great."

Leverkusen are unbeaten in their seven meetings with Dutch sides in European competition (W4 D3), with the most recent coming in the Champions League last season, in a 4-0 win over Feyenoord in the league phase (September 2024).

And, overall, they have lost only two of their last 11 matches in the group/league phase of the Champions League (W5 D4).

PSV were beaten 3-1 by Union Saint-Gilloise in their opener in the competition, and though Edmond Tapsoba is wary of their threat, he is confident Leverkusen have what it takes to get a positive result.

"It will be an intense duel [on Wednesday], we're prepared for that," Tapsoba said. "The most important thing is to win. That's what it's all about.

"The team is still getting to know each other. That takes time, and it's getting better and better. That also makes us better on the pitch.

"We're well on the way to rebuilding that strong spirit from before. We're giving it our all, and I'm doing my best to give my team-mates a good feeling and help the team."
